About us
The Pembrokeshire Cancer Support Group was established in 1991, by Doreen Wormell. Doreen felt that as a Cancer Sufferer there was a gap between the patient being diagnosed and being able to come to terms with the fact that they have Cancer. Doreen was convinced that the answer was to start a Support Group in Pembrokeshire for those who had Cancer, or have had Cancer and their Carers, Friends and Family. Support came from other sufferers to start a group. Great support also came from Jane Calvert, Stoma and Breast Cancer Nurse at Withybush Hospital and Janet Griffiths, a Macmillan Nurse. The group was charged with the primary purpose of improving and maintaining the quality of life for those who have or have had Cancer and to offer support for their Carers, Family and Friends, through a non nursing environment. For a few years the group met, twice monthly, on an informal basis at the Cleddau Bridge Hotel in Pembroke Dock. As the group grew they gained recognition from the Local Health Authority for the Services they were providing.
With the imminent move to an established home and with clear objectives, the Group obtained Registered Charitable status in October 1995.
In January 1996 the group moved to a specially adapted centre in Victoria Road, Pembroke Dock, where they remained for 10 years. During this period support was extended beyond the Centre to encompass the development of Support Groups, Home Visits and an Information Point at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest.
In 2007 the Group moved to its current home at 91 Queen Street, Pembroke Dock. This has been an ideal move as the Charity Shop and Support Centre are at the same premesis. Queen Street is in the Town Centre so provides greater access to those who are in need of our services. The Centre provides facilities for those who are less mobile with ramps, wide access door and stairlifts at the front and rear of the Support Centre.
The centre provides a wide range of Holistic Services, including Reflexology, Healing, Councelling, Relaxation, Emotional Freedom therapy, Chair Yoga and will be introducing Oncology Massage, Lymphatic Drainage Massage and Full Swedish body massage starting end of September 2025, please see our services page for days, times and healing sessions currently provided.
These free services are provided to the members family who are also dealing with and living and caring for a loved one who is going through a cancer treatment diagnosis.
If you have finished your cancer treatments you can still avail of all the services, some are free to everyone, if you book the healing sessions we ask for you to make a small donation (minimum £5.00) for every session you book with us.
